The Good-ieval Times

Maya's preschool class is studying The Medieval Times, you know kings and queens, princesses and princes, sword fighting, castles, jousting, etc. (Technically the theme is "Yesteryears") They are going to have a Medieval Festival the last Friday in January where the boys will be sword fighting, among other activites for everyone. When Maya told me the boys were going to choose a girl and tie her scarf around his sword to signify who he was fighting for she sounded concerned-a little-that there were more boys than girls in her class. Anyway, I asked her if the girls were going to have a turn too and she said, "No, silly Mommy, fighting is for boys." Interesting since at home she has NO trouble fighting with her brother! I told her she needed to tell her teachers that the girls should get a chance too (sort of kidding because I know they are trying to teach about the way things were all those many years ago). So, that was a few days ago and all the buzz in her class this week is who will be fighting for who and what's going to happen. When I asked Maya about it yesterday after school, she said (which I am certain are her teachers' words) "Well, we'll just have to see what happens on Tournament Day, won't we?" Then this morning I was flipping through my January issue of Southern Living and there is a story of Juleah Nusz, a 16 year old from Amarillo, Texas, who is on her way (probably) to the 2012 Olympics in fencing! So I showed Maya a picture of the GIRL sword fighting just to be sure she KNOWS girls can do anything they want. She said, "Yes mommy I know (picture a 15 year old attitude-like DUH!) girls can do anything. (Now a happy 5 year old again) We live in the Good-ieval Times!" EXACTLY!
